Product Review: Urban Decay 24/7 liners in Velvet Rope

I've been curious about these for a long time already, and after I tried Nikki's (askmewhats) set, I liked it and HAD to buy for myself. Just a quick note, I previously mentioned that Urban Decay might be discontinuing this but it was just a false alarm. I'm happy to announce that this is back in stock.

Anyway, here are the swatches:

from left to right: Yeyo, 1999, Zero, Bourbon, Stash

These colors are more wearable than the VIP set, which is for the more adventurous ones.

Anyway, after a minute, I tried smudging them really hard. This is what happened:

It's really hard to see, but I place an arrow to show where it smudged. The metallic ones smudged a teeny, teeny bit but only the glitter particles. The color remained intact. However, Zero, the matte black, did smudge. You can see that there is a small gray streak on top of the swatch.

Even though these received a lot of raves, I really didn't expect it to hold up to my oily lids! No matter how "smudgeproof" these are, pencil liners are really not for me. I actually bought these for my waterline. Now that's another story! In my waterline, these stay on for more than 8 hours without smudging. That is, except for Zero (black). With Zero, it smudges with me after 10 minutes only! :(

More good news: I'm wearing contact lens and I didn't experience any bad reactions to this as opposed to MUFE Aqua Eyes (my eyes became so painful after 2 hours), which is why I bought this instead.

So what is the verdict? Except for Zero (black), everything works really well on my waterline. This is not suitable for very oily-lidded gals like me, though. Trust me, I have a really oily face!

Will I buy this again? Yes, I will buy 24/7 liners again, but I might think about buying these individually because the black liner is not as good as the rest.

Wow, those look really great. Where did you get them?

Also--I have a really oily face too, can you recommend foundies/powders that will stay on and keep my face matte all day? >>

hi chrissy! i got them from ebay. UD is currently having a sale (i think it's still ongoing). if you have a relative from the US, maybe you could ask them to buy for you. regarding good oil control products, please refer to my featured post (located at the upper right side of my blog) entitled "My favorite oil control products." a lot of people kasi ask me about that e so i decided to put a link in the front page na. for foundations, try heavy coverage mineral foundations. with a good primer, they last until i have to wash my face at night!

Wow, sorry I didn't notice that! THanks for the advice, I did notice that mineral foundie works for me.

What primer do you use?

thiamere, when i finish my orders from stila, i'm going on an online shopping ban too! haha. i've spent too much money this month already. DARN that urban decay sale!

chrissy, i'm glad it works for you. it doesn't cake in the middle of the day either! for everyday use, i use bare naturals S5 primer (try the new skin perfecting primer, i heard it's even better) or camellia rose primer. monistat is for heavy duty days lang. HTH!

Could it be that there was something wrong with that particular black pencil :-/ (and not the whole Zero formula)?
Anyway, thanks for the review :). I don't really like black liner anyway, but I might get the white and red ones some day :).

that is possible, but i'm not the only one that noticed that the black smudges. i think it has to do with the fact that it's the only matte liner among the group. everything else is metallic.

Crystal, so true! the black one smudges even on me!!! And I don't have oily lids :) i think these are not meant for our weather! hehehe :)

Crystal said...

nikki, whoa these smudge on you? if it smudges on you then my lids don't stand a chance! you're right. it might not be meant for our weather. the others work well though. i especially love yeyo (white).

they look so nice! but out of the colours, it had to be the black one the smudges? and it is the most commonly used one too. :(

Crystal, oh that's sad..I'm actually aiming for Zero..but thanks for the review, I will just look for a better pencil eyeliner for tightlining my upper lashline..I tried Artdeco magic eyeliner pencil earlier and it smudged on me too.. :(

Crystal said...

yu, i know right? if you're interested though, you might want to check out urban decay, maybe they have a metallic black liner there. i have a feeling it will work better.

gale, i tried the artdeco liquid liner and it smudged on me too. :(

Aww, sorry to hear you didn't like Zero. It's the only one I use regularly in my Velvet Rope and VIP 24/7 liner sets. Have you tried lining your lower lashline with UDPP or a neutral shadestick like Butter-nutty? It would prevent the smudging of liners. I love how creamy, pigmented and smooth Zero is, but I guess the downside is that the creaminess makes it smudge if you have oily skin, so primer on the lower lashline would help.

blair, i've never been to malaysia. maybe it's colder there than it is here so it won't smudge that much.

aileen, thanks for that tip! i'll try using my UDPP on my lower lashline. that would probably be a big help.
